The D is silent

Happy New Year, blog and blog friends! I started off 2013 with a long-awaited trip to the movies to see Django Unchained, and it was so crazy good that I'm still thinking about it 3 days later.

Disclaimer: Anyone who has ever been to a movie with me knows that I get super squeamish when it comes to guns and blood. So, needless to say, I spent a lot of time shielding my eyes, but there's no denying the impact of violence in this film. Of course it was over the top, but it also reminds us that slavery was a dark time in our history, and it's important to be aware of it.

Reasons to Like Django Unchained (or rather, Reasons Why I Like Django Unchained):

1. Pure cinematography. This movie was a visual masterpiece, from the settings to the camera angles and yes, even the shootouts. Also, I'm a sucker for American history, so basically watching Django was 3 hours of awesome.
2. Leonardo DiCaprio. No surprise there - Leo was his usual badass self. It was cool to see him as the bad guy, and he even convincingly made me hate him (just for a second, though).
3. Dr. King Schultz. Over the course of watching this movie, I developed one of my shameless Older Man Crushes (these are often directed towards fictional characters; think Atticus Finch) on the character Dr. Schultz. Major hats off to Christoph Waltz on his performance. <3
4. The soundtrack. I've never heard a Tarantino soundtrack I didn't like, but WOW, Django has got to have the best music by far. I immediately bought the soundtrack after watching the movie. Some favorites: "Who Did That To You", "I Giorni Dell'ira" (would like to hear this in a drum corps show), and "I Got A Name." Can't. stop. listening.

Conclusion: go watch Django. And if you're going to a theater somewhere near San Francisco, invite me so I can watch it again. :)
